B5 Industries, LLC

Applied Research

Research at the edge of the physically possible.

B5 Industries conducts long-horizon research and engineering in quantum information, advanced propulsion, and the physical sciences underlying both. Our work is conducted quietly, by a small staff, across a small number of facilities.

01 — Mandate

We work on problems whose solutions are presumed to lie decades away — and occasionally find that the intervening distance is shorter than the field believes.

Programs are organized around a single principle: that meaningful advancement in the physical sciences requires sustained attention, capable instrumentation, and the freedom to pursue questions whose answers cannot be scheduled.

02 — Research Programs

Active areas of investigation.

RP-014
Fiber optic coils on a photonics test bench

Quantum Communications

Research into entanglement-mediated information transfer and the construction of geographically distributed quantum network testbeds. Current work addresses decoherence mitigation in fiber-coupled photonic systems and the development of repeater architectures suitable for continental-scale deployment.

RP-022
Engine test stand with exhaust plume

Advanced Propulsion Systems

Investigation of non-chemical propulsion concepts for cislunar and deep-space mission profiles, including pulsed electromagnetic accelerators, magnetoplasmadynamic thrusters, and continuous-impulse architectures intended for crewed transit beyond Earth–Moon Lagrangian space.

RP-031
Anechoic chamber interior with absorptive pyramids

Metamaterials & Photonic Structures

Design and fabrication of engineered electromagnetic media exhibiting properties unavailable in naturally occurring materials. Active areas include negative-index composites, broadband cloaking layers, and substrate-integrated waveguides for millimeter-wave applications.

RP-047
Laser optics on an isolation table

Directed Energy & High-Power Optics

Development of solid-state and fiber-combined laser systems for atmospheric propagation studies, adaptive optical compensation, and precision ranging. Beam control work emphasizes wavefront correction at extended distances and through turbulent media.

RP-053
Dark sky with deep-field astronomical imagery

Computational Cosmology

Numerical modeling of large-scale structure formation, dark-sector phenomenology, and gravitational wave signatures from compact binary inspirals. The program maintains a dedicated computing cluster optimized for sparse N-body simulation.

RP-068
Dilution refrigerator with copper plate assembly

Cryogenic Systems & Superconductivity

Materials research targeting elevated critical temperatures in layered cuprate and hydride systems. Engineering work focuses on closed-cycle dilution refrigeration and the integration of superconducting circuitry into broader sensing and computation platforms.

05 — Selected Engagements

From those with whom we have worked.

The cryogenic subsystem B5 delivered for our orbital sensor program performed at specification through every thermal cycle. They were the only group on our shortlist willing to commit to the tolerances we needed.

Dr. Margaret Halvorsen Principal Investigator, Cryogenic Sensing Group Continental Aerospace Systems

B5 operates with a discipline you do not always find at this scale. They are realistic about what is hard, specific about what is achievable, and consistently on schedule when they say they will be.

Lt. Col. Adrian Reyes (Ret.) Senior Technical Advisor Defense Advanced Concepts Office

We engaged B5 for a feasibility study on photonic repeater architectures. Their final report identified three failure modes our internal team had not considered. The work is careful, quiet, and unusually candid.
